To check soil drainage, dig a hole 12" wide by twelve" deep during the planting space. Fill the hole with water and Enable it drain. Then, right after it drains, fill it with drinking water again, but this time clock just how long it's going to take to empty. In nicely-drained soil the water stage will go down in a charge of about one inch an hour.
